A legősibb standard tánc a keringő. A XIX. század táncéletét a keringő mellett a polka és a galopp uralta. A forradalmi pezsgés a XX. században indult meg. Az első táncformák Amerikából kerültek át Európába, így például a Tangó 1907-ben, a Onestep 1910-ben és a Ragtime 1912-ben. Az első világbajnokságot 1909-ben rendezték Párizsban, majd a másodikat 1910-ben Nizzában, azonban az I. világháború alatt Franciaországban és Németországban betiltották a táncot.
Más volt a helyzet Angliában, ahol elfordultak a klasszikus balettalapoktól és a természetes mozgásformákhoz közeledtek. A régi táncok körtánc jellegét felváltották a haladó mozgások, melyek eleinte még féltalpra helyeződtek. A táncok kisebb alkotórészét adták a forgások. A Foxtrott, amely a Ragtime-ból nőtt ki, gyorsan az "angol stílus" meghatározója lett. Az Angolkeringőnél, mely a Boston továbbfejlődéséből keletkezett, a tág tér és a forgó lépések dominálnak, míg a Bostonra az egyenes vonalú irány volt a jellemző. A Tangó mindenekelőtt kubai és argentin néptáncokból fejlődött ki és indult hódító útjára.
1929-től a táncversenyeken a standard kategóriában az Angolkeringőt, Tangót, Slowfoxot, Quickstepet és a Bluest táncolták. A táncok fő ismertetőjele a könnyedén kivitelezett természetes és dinamikus továbbhaladás volt. 1929-től Németország, Skandinávia, Hollandia, Belgium és Franciaország is követte az angol stílust, melynek terjesztéséről Alex Moore gondoskodott.
Az amatőr és profi versenyek szétválása a 30-as években kezdődött. A lépéseket ekkor már szakkönyvekben rögzítették. Döntő esemény volt 1951-ben a Bécsi keringőfelvétele a standard táncok közé, amelyet egy német tánctanár, Paul Krebs koreografált. Az egyes versenytáncok tempóját 1954-ben a Nemzetközi Tánctanár Szövetség határozta meg.
A standard táncok - melyeket részben már a 20-as években is táncoltak a versenyeken - a jelen versenyprogramban a következők: Angolkeringő, Tangó, Bécsi keringő, Slowfox és Quicstep.
